The Blackberry Thicket

Portrait When I was little my family had a cabin in the woods that my great-grandfather had built during the Great Depression. At the bottom of the cabin there was a blackberry thicket that at one point had been tame, but as the decades passed, by the time I was around the thing had become very wild. But the berries were still delicious as they had always been. Some were tart, some were honey-sweet, some were big and plump, some were small and extra tangy. But with the fruit were the thorns; angry razor sharp claws that greedily protected their gems. And, as is always the case, the best berries were always located right in the thick of the sharpest brambles. There were easier berries to pick, but they were never as delicious. I wanted only the best, but it was tricky and even dangerous at times. I learned that the only way to get the prize was to go look ahead and pay attention to where it was that I wanted to go and then slowly take my time. I had to watch each step, notice each rock and stick, watch where the dangers were, and just enjoy the whole process. The berries were ten times sweeter when I was scratched by the thorns to get it.
